ETC March 2011 Quarterly Meeting
On the 20th anniversary of the launch of European ETC initiatives, the meeting hosted by the LSE provided a selection of presentations, followed by a stimulating panel session that raised the following questions:
1. Is ETC still important? Discussion: Market risk (pre-confirm); Credit risk (post confirm); Ops risk (STP and data integrity). Conclusion: Yes
2. Why is ETC still not ubiquitous i.e. why are we still talking about this? Discussion: Prime Brokers and use of bespoke portals for Tier 1 Hedge Funds; different solutions for different asset classes, lack of differential pricing around operationally inefficient clients ....fragmented vendor space.
3. Has vendor competition in this space Helped or Hindered ETC take up? Discussion: standards, networks, SWIFT versus Omgeo versus Markit et al the tension between efficient monopoly and commercial freedom to compete vendor focus on product silos not x-asset class......... winners and losers.
4. Will increased regulation Push or Distract from more ETC? Discussion: CCP and Clearing House models are changing, new offerings expected to come to market Ops risk measures and increased capital charges for bilateral business push firms towards bespoke Clearing House models.....
Conclusion - ETC more important than ever.
